Our Ancestors' Land

Information on the two videos in the installation/exhibit: "Our Ancestors' Land" runs 22 minutes. The video grew out of a natural conversation while taping "Grandfathers," an original poem by Emjayzee, of the Menominee Tribe, Owl Clan. During the setup for taping, an unscripted conversation developed with Jane Stevens, Emjayzee, and Nancy Bechtol, videographer. Excerpts of this personal discussion became part of the video. Continuous soundtrack features the songs of Cricket Hill Singers, from the American Indian Center-Chicago and ambient songs from the Inter Tribal gathering at the UIC Pavillion, recorded live in November 2002 by Nancy Bechtol. The ideas behind the project are discussed, as well as ancestry. Original digital photo by Warren Perlstein, "Red Dancer" and photographic prints and MPEG movie clips shot by Stevens are included in the videos. Also, Robert Wapahi appears in the video in a sequence about visions. There is also another creative video specifically made for projection on a drum in the installation and runs on a DVD/VCD player continuously. Both videos are original works and digitally videotaped and edited. Production and postproduction by Shadow Bechtol Studio, with David Bechtol, Technical Supervisor. Videos created in collaboration with Jane Stevens.
